The Tryton

From Bemused

The Tryton

The Ascent of Man

Inspired by William Blake's The Tyger

Tryton! Tryton! changing tides
in some books from ancient times,
which impious cogent mind
could frame thy exile from the Sea?

In which sober human soul
arose the doubting of thy role?
By what standard does he live?
What the purpose does he have?

By what reason, by what wit
was his thought so strangely lit?
And who was freed, & whose god fell,
when he grasped thine hollow shell?

What the battle? What the war?
And what conflict at the core?
What the message? What brave heart
dared against the gods to start?

When he saw the cosmos clear
and sensed no deities were near,
did he choose reality?
Did he who faced the facts write thee?

Tryton! Tryton! changing tides
in some books from ancient times,
which impious cogent mind
would frame thy exile from the Sea?
